skin tightening for women

The Viora ReAction Vs. The Cutera Titan: A Skin Tightening Procedure Comparison

Skin tightening has been a progressively more popular procedure. Older women are visiting medi-spa clinics all over North America for it. But women fresh off a pregnancy are getting it. But before we get into the specifics of a couple skin tightening procedures, let’s first examine the problem with skin over time and why people get skin tightening procedures.

Why Does Skin Loosen?

Skin is effectively a living, breathing organ. Contrary to what some may think, it’s not just a mat of rubber that covers your entire body. It has cells and on the outer part of your skin, these cells are constantly replaced with new cells. However, under that outer layer, cells are much more permanent – plus, they are made up of all sorts of different tissues.

As we get older, we lose body fat and this has an effect on the way our skin looks. When you lose body fat and weight, those aforementioned elastic parts don’t exactly have much time to adapt to your new shape. This explains why as you increase in years, your skin tends to sag and loosen.

Why Would Someone Want To Tighten Their Skin?

So why the heck would someone ever get a skin tightening procedure? Well let me tell you: Loose and saggy skin just doesn’t look or feel right for a lot of people. Patients tell me that they want to look great, whether that’s right after pregnancy or at another critical time when your skin is at-risk to sag. Many people want to get rid of the bags under their eyes or loose skin under the neck. After all, all of these issues are common – and noone wants to have to live through them.

But of course, innovation comes to the rescue. There are skin tightening procedures that can help rejuvenate how your skin looks so that, well, you can look like how you want to – and shed the years off your appearance in the process. We at CüR Laser and Skin now offer two different treatments for skin tightening, the Cutera Titan and the Viora ReAction. More on those in a bit.

How Do These Treatments Tighten Your Skin?

These skin tightening treatments involve sending energy of some form to layers underneath the outer layer of your skin in order to stimulate the formulation of collagen. The energy itself varies by the procedure. I’ll tell you a bit more about that shortly.

What Is Collagen?

Collagen is a protein made up of amino acids and effectively makes up around 30% of the proteins in your body. It’s part of the connective tissue in skin that helps with the firmness and elasticity of skin cells. Its use is to give strength to various structures in your body, and in this case, your skin. Collagen protein is what holds things together. Collagen growth and production slow as you age. The result is you’ll notice thinning, sagging, and wrinkling of skin over time.

What Will Happen During A Skin Tightening Procedure

Once the treatment has been started and the energy has been sent to the areas underneath the surface of your skin, collagen forms and tightens. Over the following months, it will continue to tighten and this is around the time you’ll see results. Treatments are cumulative – you’ll see ongoing improvements for each subsequent treatment. Usually, a series of treatments are done 2-4 weeks apart and then once every 3-6 months for maintenance.

Now to those forms of energy – there many different kinds that are used to stimulate collagen formation. These include ultrasound, infrared and radio frequency. A number of companies like Viora and Cutera are producing innovative devices to perform this treatment, differentiating themselves by using additional technologies to provide comfort and effectiveness. These technologies include cooling tips, vacuum suction and variable frequencies. One of the very first devices using radio frequency was Thermage. A single Thermage treatment would cost upwards of $3000 and required heavy pain killers for the treatment. More comfortable and effective technologies have been developed since then.

As I mentioned, after extensive research and trials, CüR Laser and Skin now carries 2 effective, safe and comfortable skin tightening devices – the Cutera Titan and the Viora ReAction.

Cutera Titan

The first is the Cutera Titan. Scientists discovered light and radiofrequencies can heat the underlayers of your skin while still keeping the surface of your skin cool. The Cutera Titan uses infrared light to stimulate collagen formation underneath your outer layer of skin in order to give a younger look.

How Cutera Titan Works

Titan uses a fairly uniform distribution of infrared energy to ensure a deep heating of the layer underneath your skin. The Titan handpiece makes sure the surface of your skin remains cool. Heating the collagen under your skin forces it to contract and thicken. This also micro-injures the dermis so that it can repair itself with new collagen for the following 2-3 months. Patients of any age can be treated and any skin type. We’ve used this device at our clinic for years and with good feedback and results.

Benefits of the Cutera Titan

  • Mostly pain-less
  • Little-to-no risk of skin irregularity
  • Considered best device for skin laxity

Viora ReAction

The second one is a newer device called the Viora ReAction. It’s versatile and opens up many other treatment options than we’ve experienced before.

How The Viora ReAction Works

The Viora ReAction uses variable radio frequencies with a gentle, massaging suction that allows us to treat saggy eyelids, bags under the eyes, softening jowls and nasolabial folds, loose skin under the chin and on the neck, loose post pregnancy skin, stretch marks and cellulite.

It uses 3 different modes of radiofrequencies to heat the skin and target varying depths of tissue beneath. The Viora ReAction also uses vacuum technology to intensify the process and allow for deeper (and safe) penetration of the skin.

It also has a built-in cooling system to keep your skin cool while the device does the hard work.

Benefits of the Viora ReAction

  • The only device to offer 3 distinct treatment options (radiofrequencies)
  • Control, precision and penetration
  • Safe and non-invasive
  • Studies conducted by Viora show that 81% of those who got the treatment saw an improvement in skin texture after 1 session
  • In the same study, 75% of patients noticed a reduction in circumference after 2 sessions

Lastly…

Both treatments are comfortable, pain-free and effective, taking only 20-30 minutes each with no downtime. Patients usually notice immediate skin tightening followed by progressive and ongoing skin tightening over subsequent weeks and months.
