1. Bonchaz Bakery Cafe – 189 E Broadway, Vancouver

In the summer of 2009, Bonchaz was a just little stall at the vibrant local Vancouver Farmers Markets that sold a single product, the Bonchaz bun. While the sweet-dough bun with a butter and sugar filling, topped with a thin crust of cookie dough has proved to be a big hit, it’s more than just a tasty treat for founder Michael Lui. For this Mount Pleasant entrepreneur, the Bonchaz represents a dream to reinvent the familiar, and to test the boundaries of traditional bakery & cafe culture.

Bonchaz Bakery Cafe’s first store opened in 2010 at the edge of Gastown. In the continuing journey to change up cafe culture, the Bonchaz bun can now be found in multiple flavours and Lui’s menu is purposely ever evolving. From reinventing classic favorites like our Peanut Butter Nanaimo Bar to home-style fusion like  Italian Sausage Chowder, you can count on inspired recipes on the menu that reflect the diversity of our city.

3. Burgoo Bistro – 3096 Main Street, Vancouver

Adding to the home-like feel is the old-world countryside ambience of earth tones, natural finishes and materials that harkens back to a simpler time.

And just in case you’re curious, the word “burgoo” comes from a book called Stews, Bogs and Burgoos, which the owner checked out from Vancouver’s Downtown Public Library.

“That term sounded so much better than “StewArts,” which was the initial working name of the concept, that we called our new restaurant “Burgoo,” says their website.

While it’s food that bonds the group, the restaurant really came together for the partners when they blended casual dining with the concept of an art gallery. Throughout the year, the walls of Sal y Limion restaurant will showcase the works of various Mexican artists. Fiesta!

5. Earnest Ice Cream – 1829 Quebec Street, Vancouver

Earnest Ice Cream was born from friendship and a shared love of ice cream. Since owners Ben Ernst and Erica Bernardi opened hot…er, cool spot, back in 2012, they’ve been serving up ice cream that expresses a passion for flavour and a business that embodies their values.
